Settle in, this is bound to get wordy, mostly because the words I want to say haven't been spoken into existence yet. There are times in my life when I feel I will burst from love and happiness, one of the very best of those times was in August on the beach, which is really my favorite place of all.
Several years ago I came across the scrapbook world and there in the middle was Tara Whitney (she's laughing but it's true). I started to follow her work in an online community and remember when she announced on the forum that her husband had bought her a Canon 10D. From the beginning her photos captivated me, they were real and raw. I have been a blog stalker and Tara junkie since then.
When we left home in May and headed towards the pacific I began to scheme. I started a life list not so long ago and one of the things on this list was to have our family in front of Tara's lens. When it looked like we would be finishing out the working season in CA, I contacted her to make this happen. I was a super determined girl at this point and even told Dan that I would need nothing for Christmas if he would give me this.

We met at the beach on a beautiful Monday night. My kids in their thrift stores clothes and worn out shoes. It had to be that way, I wanted the real us to be captured. I wanted to look back at the photos later and remember everything about this time in our life. She was the girl to give us this. There were no posed, pretend moments.

This photographer girl came along with us that night, but when she left there was more to it than that. We clicked with her, my kids were themselves in front of her (possibly because I had talked about her so much that they felt like she was family).
One of the really important things that I wanted captured from that night was the love I feel for Dan. We joked that night that she was giving us marriage counseling, we stole a few moments while the kids were off on their bikes and she gave us this.

When she showed me the next photo on the back of her camera that night, tears flooded my eyes. It was us. The us that we are when it is just the 6 of us and no one is watching. Us, on our bikes, at the beach in the haze of sunset, us with our home in the parking lot, us in the middle of the fullness of our lives.

When she left us that night, my heart was about to burst. The sand had hidden itself away in all of our clothes, the kids were soaked from the sprays of the ocean, my foot was bloody from the rocks, but my heart....full and content.
(I won't tell you that when we left we ended up stuck in a cul de sac, unhooking the car so that we could turn around, I won't tell you that we hadn't eaten dinner and it was 9 o'clock, or that we ended up eating Carls Jr because it was the only place we could get into with our 50 foot rig. Or that now when I refer to Tara I say "My friend Tara Whitney" once a stalker, always a stalker)
I will however tell you this, when she sent me the link to our photos I tweeted this "Sitting in the parking lot bumming wifi to watch our slideshow from @tarawhitney. This mama heart is weeping." and a few moments later this "I wish I could buy each one of you a session with her. There is no price tag on what she gave to me, to us."
Dan is laid off right now. Our Christmas will be small and simple. But we will have this night forever.

Beautiful. Photos and words. xxoo
ReplyDeleteWow -- sometimes there arent words.
ReplyDeletePrayers going up for employment stuff
wow is right! those are beautiful pictures...so much captured w/o a single word.
ReplyDeleteThe pics are great, so glad you have those! I got here from Christine's blog and have visited before, but I must not have bookmarked it. I hope our paths cross soon. We're also on the road, parenting trauma, and new hoopers! :)
ReplyDeleteWonderful words, beautiful pictures. They invoked a sense of awe in me as well...we keep dreaming about the idea of being where you are. Seeing the world, being ourselves. It feels as though this great big house inhibits our family...who we really are and who we can be...I love seeing the raw pictures of who you are, who your family is, and what your life is...jealous really...
ReplyDeleteI have stalker potential too, lol :)
I love your post.... beautiful pics....such a lovely family you have.
ReplyDeleteI hope we can get together while you are in texas..
Sending love to you guys. Merry Christmas!
why am I sitting in an office reading this with tears in my eyes? because my heart hears yours and FEELS your words as if they were my own. I'm a Tara stalker too and if she ever decides to come to Sydney, Australia - I'm down for some of that magic. In the meantime, I strive to be just like her when I grow up!

ReplyDeleteSo lovely-- the photos... your family, your words.
ReplyDeleteAwesome photos! I love the fact that SIX of you are travelling in that RV! I admire you coz for us it was just me and my hubby for 4 years doing much the same thing....(and how cramped that could be at times!) Right down to planning out our Tara Whitney photoshoot when we reached SoCal... And at Doheney State Beach too no less! Brings back great memories for me.... And seeing the happiness and carefree spirits in your beautiful photos makes me long for our simpler days before we settled back down to a 'conventional' life. Happy and safe travels
ReplyDeletei love them alicia...'your friend tara whitney' definitely captured you're beautiful family just as you are.
ReplyDeleteif you're ever make your way back through salt lake i'd love to get together with you and jefra and mindy again.
happy new year!
We are an RV family, too. We lived in ours as a family of four for 11 months in AZ and WA. It was a great time in our lives and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Well, that's not entirely true. I did trade it. For toilets that flush with a handle and closets. Alas, we still have our Rig and love to travel in it.
ReplyDeleteLove your pictures and dream of getting in front of TW's lens one day myself. Good luck on the job front and happy trails to you and yours!

ReplyDeleteThese are amazing pictures and I'm so intrigued by you! I was reading last night about your journey to adopt your little one ... bless your heart. I have a daughter with Down syndrome and we adopted a second from Russia. All of our kids might bring struggles with them, but looking from the inside out and knowing what a blessing you are to her ... and she to you ... is amazing. Enjoy your journey ... I wish I had the balls to just get up and go!
ReplyDeleteThese photos are amazing!! What a beautiful family you have!! Tara is a wonderful photographer... in addition you are so blessed because she can not capture what is not already there. Wow, everything about this post is beautiful. My eyes are watering up as I type this. I'm filled with joy that I found your blog through Tara's ! Wow.
ReplyDeleteincredible. beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI to am a "Tara blog stalker", and a fellow photographer. I recently made a trip out to California to see my sister for her wedding, and our Father who has two forms of Cancer, recently lost his job and his marriage of 12 years has fallen apart despite his attempt to keep it together. I had wanted to badly to hire her, it seemed the wrong time, the best time, the worst time. My husband owns a BMX bike shop and me as a freelance photographer...times have been tight in this economy. When I read "I wish I could buy each one of you a session with her." it moved me. I am so happy for you, and I can't wait to do this! XO
ReplyDeleteBeautiful post, lovely words, gorgeous family..made me weepy and happy too. WOuld love this of my family. I have always loved Tara's work. So happy for you what a treasure and beautiful family you have.
ReplyDeleteMore than beautiful. Sums up how I feel about my "journey" of savings for our family session, planned in my mind and hopefully will come to fruition sometime in the next year or so. Made my heart glow just to see your images and picture my family having such a momento of our lives together. Thank you for sharing!!
ReplyDeleteI am a Tara stalker, too. I live in Atlanta and daydream sometimes about getting out to the OC to get in front of her lens! One day...
ReplyDeleteBeautiful life. Beautiful family. I just love how free your spirits are... Best of luck on your travels!!!
ReplyDeleteI came from a link on Tara Whitney's blog. I just had to tell you I think your family is BEAUTIFUL.
ReplyDeletethese are the some of the BEST photos i have seen by Tara (came here via her blog)! your family is beautiful. i am always in awe of the realness that she captures.
ReplyDeleteshe is on my dream list, too! :)
glad you were able to make it happen!
you will treasure these forever.
*sniff *sniff *drip *drip. Amazing words and amazingly beautiful genuine people in front of and behind the lens. Found you via Tara Whitney as I ~stalk~ her blog too. ;) Hope your family is able to weather the storm of underemployment/overemployment.
ReplyDeleteYour family is absolutely my favourite Tara family of all time. Ever.
ReplyDeleteI dream of having Tara do a session with my family, but that is a dream that is most likely unattainable, both financially and geographically.
